The Magdalene Sisters
OK, so I couldn't sleep the other night and I thought, hey I'll watch a whimsical movie that's entertaining to which I could just fall asleep to. I chose "The Magdalene Sisters" because I thought it was like a "Charmed (TV SHOW)" type of story with 3 sister witches going through live as witches. Yes, I like vampires and witches and all the dark art fairytales.
Anyways, its 1am and I start watching this movie called The Magdalene Sisters. The first scene is of this girl getting raped by her friend, the second scene is of a girl who gives birth to a baby boy out of wedlock, the third scene is of this pretty girl who is flirting with some boys. Of course the first scene notifies to me that this probably isn't some lighthearted funy movie. I'm just gawking at the tv wide awake for sure now because now all three girls are at some kind of aslyum with nuns who treat them as slaves.
Needless to say, I stayed up for the whole entire movie knowing I had to wake up at 7am the next morning to go to an MCLE seminar at the law school here. OMG!
The movie ended up being a documentary about teenage girls in Ireland being sent to thses Magdalene aslyums to work as slaves. These girls were the ones who were deemed "fallen" or immoral or "bad" girls - girls who get raped (deflowered), girls who have babies out of wed-lock, girls who flirt with boys and therefore have bad thoughts. They are literally locked in the rooms, worked to death, completely humiliated etc. What's more incredible is that the parents put their girls into the asylum. The girls can be easily taken out of the asylum by their parents or relatives or brothers or sisters who come and get them. How insane is that?
In 2009, the Ireland government released a 2000 page report "Ryan Report" of these kind of horrific child abuse happening all around.
I just wanted to share this little bit with you. It was an eye opening movie and one I definitely had to google after I watched it.
